Introduction
To achieve the IMO’s target of carbon neutrality in international shipping by around 2050 and to address global warming, contributions from the international maritime sector have become crucial. Japan's maritime and shipbuilding industries are making various efforts to meet the GHG reduction strategy established by the IMO, which aims for a 20-30% reduction by 2030, a 70-80% reduction by 2040, and net zero emissions by around 2050. In particular, achieving this strategy requires the utilization of new fuels. In Japan's maritime industry, LNG and methanol are being adopted as transitional fuels, while efforts are underway to introduce technologies for the practical application, decomposition, and safe use of hydrogen and ammonia—energies that do not emit CO₂ during use—into new ship building. In Japan, beyond decarbonization, there is a strong focus on sustainable shipbuilding development. Leading the world, Japan is rapidly advancing research and implementation of technologies for conversion to high-quality, safe, and cost-effective fuels. Even as shipowners and operators consider their options for next-generation fuels, Japan is moving forward with comprehensive technologies that can use a variety of fuels and with solutions for ships utilizing wind propulsion, attracting attention in the process. Through this booklet, we hope readers will take note of Japan’s maritime industry as it becomes more unified and collaborates not only within the industry but also with the public, private, and academic sectors to supply the world with ships that can accommodate next-generation fuels using cutting-edge technology. |
